Groin Pain

The term "groin pain" can actually have multiple meanings. Groin pain could refer to pain from an injury to the upper thigh region. Groin injuries are fairly common in sports and often results from muscle pulls or strains in the general area where the legs meet.

Groin pain can also refer to any pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen. Such pains may be caused by conditions, disorders or diseases of the organs in the area.

In males, groin pain may refer to pain that's felt in the scrotum or testicles.

Here's a list of the most common causes of groin pain.

Groin injury As mentioned above, this often involves the muscles in the lower abdomen or upper thighs. It typically occurs to athletes when the muscles of the inner thigh, known as abductors, are stretched or torn. These injuries can be serious and should get medical attention as quickly as possible. In most cases though, a "groin pull" will heal on it's own with time and rest.

Testicular cancer This is an extremely dangerous cause of groin pain. As Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has proved, however, early detection of testicular cancer can be extremely successful.

Hip and pelvis injuries Fractures and serious injuries in the hip and pelvis regions can make the entire area painful.

Hernia Part of the body slips through a tear or opening in an adjacent part. This occurs most often in the abdomen and can result in groin pain.

Swollen groin lymph nodes This happens sometimes in cases involving sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Spinal/nerve problems When there's a problem in the spine, such as a slipped disc, pain can radiate down to the groin.

Kidney stones The first symptom of kidney stones is usually pain in the back or flank area, but a kidney stone can also trigger pain in the lower abdomen or testicles.

Urinary tract infections Also known as UTIs. Bacteria enters the body through the male penis or the female vagina and works its way up higher in the urinary tract. This bacteria results in an infection. The result is often a stinging or burning sensation in the genital area.

Testicular injury Although most men wear protective devices when playing sports, testicular injuries still happen.

Orchitis This is a condition in which the testicles become inflamed and painful. Swelling and infection are typical. Orchitis, which is sometimes spelled orchiditis, is serious and should receive medical attention as soon as possible.
